What are crowns and why choose one?
A crown is a tooth shaped, custom made cap which is bonded to your existing tooth. A crown enables us to restore strength to a tooth whilst also maintaining a natural feel and finish. Once you are used to it a crown will feel just the same as your other teeth.

How do crowns work – step by step

Crown preparation
Firstly, your tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. We carefully reshape it to create space for the crown. Once prepared, we take a scan of your tooth, which is sent to the lab to create your custom crown. While you wait (usually around two weeks), we place a temporary acrylic crown in place to protect the tooth.

Fitting the crown
At your second appointment, we’ll remove the temporary crown and check the fit, shape, and colour of your new crown to ensure it feels comfortable and looks natural. Once you’re happy, the crown is permanently secured using dental adhesive.
After fitting, you should avoid biting into hard foods for a day or two to protect your new crown while it settles.
How long do crowns last & what to expect after
Typically, dental crowns can last between 10-15 years. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular dental check-up visits to ensure the maximum lifespan of your crown.

What are Crowns made of?
At AP Dental, we offer crowns made from high quality materials, including porcelain, zirconia, and metal. Porcelain crowns are popular for their natural appearance, especially for front teeth. For the very back teeth, metal offers durability when needed.
Are Crowns appointments painful?
Having a dental crown requires some preparation of the underlying tooth; however, this is done with local anaesthetic, so you will not feel anything. You may experience some mild sensitivity after the appointments, which should clear after 1-2 days.
What do I do if my crown comes off?
If your crown becomes loose or falls off, call the practice as soon as possible. We will quickly book you in for an appointment to recement or replace the crown to prevent further damage.
Can a crowned tooth still get decay?
The crown itself cannot decay; however, the edge of the tooth where it joins can. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular dental hygiene visits to ensure the maximum lifespan of your crown.
